Proficiency Testing
Five questions to ask before you choose a proficiency testing scheme

Proficiency testing gives a laboratory an objective view of how accurate and reliable its results are, and a way to benchmark against peers nationally or internationally. But not every scheme suits every laboratory. These five questions help you choose well.
- Does the scheme resemble your daily testing? Check the sample matrices, the test methods on offer, and whether the handling, testing and reporting protocols are clear and compatible with your procedures.
- How good is the data? Look at reports from previous rounds. Is the spread of results what you would expect for your key tests?
- Who else takes part? Find out how many participating laboratories are accredited and how many use methods comparable to yours.
- Is the statistics sound? Ask how results from different methods are grouped, and whether performance is assessed using internationally recognised procedures.
- Is the reporting useful and timely? A report should be easy for your staff, and for an assessor, to read and act on.
If you cannot find a scheme that fits, ask the provider about a bespoke program. Many providers can design product- or test-specific rounds around a laboratory's own needs.
